Automated summary
Guides the authoring of a new agent skill: requirement gathering, file layout, a SKILL.md template, and writing the trigger description.
Strengths
- Enforces a description format of what it does plus "Use when…", backed by a clear bad example
- Ships a reusable directory layout and SKILL.md template ready to fill in
- Gives concrete thresholds for splitting files (over 100 lines) and for adding deterministic scripts
- Ends with a short, actionable review checklist
Limitations
- No method for verifying afterwards that the skill actually triggers on the intended requests
- Covers structure and metadata only, not the writing quality of the instruction body
- The Workflows and Advanced features sections appear in the template but without a filled-in example
Use it when creating a new SKILL.md or restructuring an existing Claude Code skill.
Avoid it for writing ordinary product documentation, or for debugging an installed skill that loads but produces poor results.
Security analysis
SafeThis is a documentation-only meta-skill describing how to author agent skills. It declares no tools, contains no executable code, no network calls, no file-system mutations, and no credential or environment access. The only artifacts are Markdown templates and guidance text, so there is no meaningful execution risk.

How this analysis is madeExamples
I want to build a skill that converts CSV exports into tidy JSON. Can you help me draft the SKILL.md properly? Here's my skill's frontmatter — the description just says "Helps with documents". Rewrite it so my agent knows when to load it.My SKILL.md is 300 lines and mixes deployment steps with schema reference. Restructure it using progressive disclosure.description: Create a new agent skill with proper structure and progressive disclosure.
Writing Skills
Process
-
Gather requirements - ask user about:
- What task/domain does the skill cover?
- What specific use cases should it handle?
- Does it need executable scripts or just instructions?
- Any reference materials to include?
-
Draft the skill - create:
- SKILL.md with concise instructions
- Additional reference files if content exceeds 500 lines
- Utility scripts if deterministic operations needed
-
Review with user - present draft and ask:
- Does this cover your use cases?
- Anything missing or unclear?
- Should any section be more/less detailed?

Description Requirements
The description is the only thing your agent sees when deciding which skill to load. It's surfaced in the system prompt alongside all other installed skills. Your agent reads these descriptions and picks the relevant skill based on the user's request.
Goal: Give your agent just enough info to know:
- What capability this skill provides
- When/why to trigger it (specific keywords, contexts, file types)
Format:
- Max 1024 chars
- Write in third person
- First sentence: what it does
- Second sentence: "Use when [specific triggers]"
Good example:
Extract text and tables from PDF files, fill forms, merge documents. Use when working with PDF files or when user mentions PDFs, forms, or document extraction.
Bad example:
Helps with documents.
The bad example gives your agent no way to distinguish this from other document skills.
When to Add Scripts
Add utility scripts when:
- Operation is deterministic (validation, formatting)
- Same code would be generated repeatedly
- Errors need explicit handling
Scripts save tokens and improve reliability vs generated code.
When to Split Files
Split into separate files when:
- SKILL.md exceeds 100 lines
- Content has distinct domains (finance vs sales schemas)
- Advanced features are rarely needed
Review Checklist
After drafting, verify:
- [ ] Description includes triggers ("Use when...")
- [ ] SKILL.md under 100 lines
- [ ] No time-sensitive info
- [ ] Consistent terminology
- [ ] Concrete examples included
- [ ] References one level deep
From the file to a first result
The download contains exactly the content displayed on this page. This copy may differ from the latest version in the source repository.
View the source and supporting filesThis download contains SKILL.md only. Any scripts, references, templates and dependencies are not included. Get the required files from the source, preserving their directory structure, before continuing.
1. Download the file
Download SKILL.mdFrom the root of a test project, save the file as .skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/SKILL.md, or use the command below. This folder is for inspecting the skill before installation.
Command for macOS/Linux or WSL: requires a POSIX shell and curl. On Windows without WSL, use the download button and create the folder manually.
mkdir -p '.skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6' && curl --fail --show-error --location 'https://skills-guides.com/api/skills/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/download' --output '.skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/SKILL.md.part' && mv '.skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/SKILL.md.part' '.skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/SKILL.md'2. Check prerequisites
Read SKILL.md before using it. If it references scripts or external services, inspect them and prepare the required access in your test environment.
No recognized prerequisites section in this file. This does not mean it is self-contained: libraries, tools and access requirements may be mentioned elsewhere in the content or source repository.
The platforms on this page are catalog indications. The paths below follow tool documentation; they do not prove this skill has been run in those tools. No minimum tool version is confirmed for this listing.
3. Load the skill
This file does not provide a usable name/description header for this native procedure. It remains available to download and inspect; use the manual method below.
Manual method or another tool: attach SKILL.md to a conversation, or open it in an agent that can read files. Include any required supporting resources. No universal folder is recognized by every tool.
4. Try a first task
Use a short, synthetic input: an API endpoint, a small document or an interface brief. In a new conversation, attach the file or give the agent its path, then adapt this request:
Read .skill-downloads/agent-skill-creation-mrwakdt6/SKILL.md and apply its instructions to this example: [describe a test input]. Identify any missing files, dependencies or access. Produce the result requested by the skill without inventing data or running unreviewed scripts.Expected result: output matching the skill instructions, or a precise list of missing prerequisites. A read confirmation alone does not validate a first use. If an external resource is unavailable, that path remains untested.
