Automated summary

Computes capacity requirements from a demand forecast and resource capacities, then produces gap analysis, resource loading, and capacity strategy recommendations.

Strengths

  • Explicit formulas for required capacity (demand / (units per hour × efficiency)) and effective capacity
  • Lead / lag / match strategy table with the conditions where each fits
  • Quantified utilization bands (under-loaded, optimal, fully loaded, over-loaded) paired with concrete actions
  • A ready list of typical what-if scenarios (demand surge, equipment breakdown, labor shortage, seasonal peak)

Limitations

  • Depends entirely on forecasts and rates supplied by the user: no actual ERP/MRP connectors despite them being listed
  • No optimization solver and no cost-of-gap versus cost-of-capacity tradeoff beyond simple cost multipliers
  • Outputs are described conceptually (tables and formulas) rather than as a fixed report template
When to use it

Use it when you need to turn a monthly demand forecast and resource capacities into an hours-based capacity gap plus a lead/lag/match recommendation.

When not to use it

Avoid it when you need a solved optimization or a financially validated investment case, or when no forecast and capacity data are available.

Security analysis

Quality score80/100

The skill is a documentation-style capacity planning guide using only file read/write/edit operations. It contains no destructive commands, credential handling, network calls, obfuscated payloads, or safety-disabling instructions. References to ERP/MRP and planning systems are conceptual, not executed by the skill.

How this analysis is made

Examples

12-month gap analysis
Run a capacity requirements plan over a 12-month horizon. Demand forecast: month 1 = 10,000 units, month 2 = 11,000, month 3 = 12,500, then +5% per month. Resources: Assembly Line 1 with 160 available hours/month, 0.85 efficiency, 50 units/hour; Assembly Line 2 with 160 hours, 0.80 efficiency, 45 units/hour. Give me capacity required per month, effective capacity, and the gap in hours.
What-if demand surge
Using my current capacity baseline, model a what-if where demand increases 20% in Q3 and Assembly Line 2 is down for three weeks. Show utilization per resource per month and flag every period above 95% with a recommended action.
Lead vs lag vs match recommendation
Our lines are running at 93% utilization and demand is growing about 15% per year, but capital is tight. Compare lead, lag and match strategies for the next 18 months, including the cost of adding overtime (1.5x) versus new equipment at 500,000 for +100% capacity, and recommend one.

Capacity Planning Process

Step 1: Calculate Requirements

Capacity Required = Demand / (Units per Hour x Efficiency)

Example:
- Demand: 10,000 units
- Rate: 50 units/hour
- Efficiency: 85%
- Required: 10,000 / (50 x 0.85) = 235 hours

Step 2: Assess Available Capacity

Effective Capacity = Available Hours x Efficiency x Utilization Target

Step 3: Identify Gaps

Capacity Gap = Capacity Required - Effective Capacity

Capacity Strategies

| Strategy | Description | When to Use | |----------|-------------|-------------| | Lead | Build capacity ahead of demand | Growth markets, competitive advantage | | Lag | Add capacity after demand materializes | Uncertain demand, capital constraints | | Match | Incrementally add capacity | Moderate growth, balanced approach |

Resource Loading Analysis

| Load Level | % Utilization | Action | |------------|---------------|--------| | Under-loaded | < 70% | Consider reduction or consolidation | | Optimal | 70-85% | Maintain current state | | Fully loaded | 85-95% | Monitor closely, plan additions | | Over-loaded | > 95% | Immediate action required |

What-If Scenarios

Common scenarios to analyze:

  1. Demand increase of 20%
  2. Equipment breakdown
  3. Labor shortage
  4. New product introduction
  5. Seasonal peak periods

Integration Points

  • ERP/MRP systems
  • Demand planning systems

This download contains SKILL.md only. Any scripts, references, templates and dependencies are not included. Get the required files from the source, preserving their directory structure, before continuing.

1. Download the file

Download SKILL.md

From the root of a test project, save the file as .skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/SKILL.md, or use the command below. This folder is for inspecting the skill before installation.

Command for macOS/Linux or WSL: requires a POSIX shell and curl. On Windows without WSL, use the download button and create the folder manually.

mkdir -p '.skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j' && curl --fail --show-error --location 'https://skills-guides.com/api/skills/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/download' --output '.skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/SKILL.md.part' && mv '.skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/SKILL.md.part' '.skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/SKILL.md'

2. Check prerequisites

Read SKILL.md before using it. If it references scripts or external services, inspect them and prepare the required access in your test environment.

No recognized prerequisites section in this file. This does not mean it is self-contained: libraries, tools and access requirements may be mentioned elsewhere in the content or source repository.

The platforms on this page are catalog indications. The paths below follow tool documentation; they do not prove this skill has been run in those tools. No minimum tool version is confirmed for this listing.

3. Load the skill

After inspection, copy the complete folder into your project using one of the commands below, then open a new tool session. The command stops if a folder with the same name already exists: compare the files before replacing it.

OpenSkills

OpenSkills must already be installed. The local install/read procedure is checked with OpenSkills 1.5.0, which requires Node.js ≥ 20.6.0. Catalog slugs are not resolved automatically.

Official OpenSkills installation
openskills install './.skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j'

openskills read 'capacity-planner-ms1aw47j'

Reading should display the installed file content and its base directory. It does not run the skill or install its dependencies.

For an agent that reads AGENTS.md, then sync the index. This command changes AGENTS.md: review the diff before using it.

openskills sync

Manual method or another tool: attach SKILL.md to a conversation, or open it in an agent that can read files. Include any required supporting resources. No universal folder is recognized by every tool.

4. Try a first task

Use a short, synthetic input: an API endpoint, a small document or an interface brief. In a new conversation, attach the file or give the agent its path, then adapt this request:

Read .skill-downloads/capacity-planner-ms1aw47j/SKILL.md and apply its instructions to this example: [describe a test input]. Identify any missing files, dependencies or access. Produce the result requested by the skill without inventing data or running unreviewed scripts.

Expected result: output matching the skill instructions, or a precise list of missing prerequisites. A read confirmation alone does not validate a first use. If an external resource is unavailable, that path remains untested.
