Non-Negotiable Invariants
- No behavior drift — Refactor only if observable behavior stays identical. Flag if uncertain.
- No blind simplification — Prove safety from usage, tests, or dependency analysis.
- Framework-aware — Rails cleanup differs from generic Ruby. Never remove callbacks, concerns, validations, or scopes without tracing all call sites.
- Test-backed output — Every cleanup includes test impact notes.
- Style ≠ critical — Style violations are lowest priority. Security and performance are first.

Quick start: paste your code and say "Deslop this". Tell the skill the stack (Rails / React /
Django) and whether you have tests. It handles the rest.

Two-Phase Workflow
Phase 1: Smell Detection
If you have tool output (RuboCop/Reek/ESLint/Ruff), use it as Phase 1 input. See references/tool-integration.md for the full pipeline.
- Scan the provided file tree, diff, or code snippets.
- Classify each finding with a category, risk score (1–5), and evidence.
- Skip files where safety cannot be established (missing tests, heavy metaprogramming, unclear side effects).
Detection order:
- Security (SQL injection, mass assignment,
rescue Exception,bare except) - Performance (N+1, count vs size, missing timeouts,
after_saveside effects) - Code smells (from the full taxonomy below)
- YARD documentation issues (stale, missing, misleading)
- Style violations (Ruby/Rails/Python/JS Style Guide)

Phase 2: Refactor Generation
For approved cleanup targets:
- Plan the minimal safe transformation.
- Write the cleaned code or diff.
- Assess regression risks.
- Advise on test targets.
Auto-proceed for risk 1–2. Ask for approval for risk 3–5.

### D. Code Smell Taxonomy (Fowler / Reek)

**Bloaters** — Code grown too large:
- Long Method (> 10 LOC) → Extract Method
- Large Class (> 50 LOC, multiple responsibilities) → Extract Class
- Long Parameter List (> 3 params) → Parameter Object
- Data Clumps (same variables always together) → Extract Class
- Primitive Obsession (raw strings/ints for domain concepts) → Value Object
**OO Abusers** — Misuse of OO principles:
- Switch on type (if/elsif chain checking `type`) → Polymorphism
- Refused Bequest (subclass ignores parent) → Replace Inheritance with Delegation
- Parallel Inheritance Hierarchies → Merge Hierarchies
- Alternative Classes with Different Interfaces → Rename / Extract Superclass
**Change Preventers** — Things that make change hard:
- Divergent Change (class changes for many reasons) → Extract Class (SRP)
- Shotgun Surgery (one change hits many files) → Move Method/Field
- Feature Envy (method uses another class's data more than its own) → Move Method
**Dispensables** — Code that should not exist:
- Duplicate Code → Extract Method / Pull Up Method
- Dead Code → Delete
- Speculative Generality (YAGNI violations) → Delete
- Lazy Class (does almost nothing) → Inline Class
- Comments explaining bad code → Fix the code, delete the comment
**Couplers** — Excessive coupling:
- Message Chains (`a.b.c.d`) → Hide Delegate / Law of Demeter
- Middle Man (class only delegates) → Inline Class
- Inappropriate Intimacy (classes know each other's internals) → Move Method / Extract Class

Auto-fix (risk 1):
- Trailing whitespace, missing final newline
- `for` loop instead of `.each`
- `if !condition` → `unless condition`
- `!!value` for boolean coercion → use `.present?` / `.nil?`
- Double negation, `not` instead of `!`
- Explicit `return` at end of method
- Redundant `self.` except for writers
Flag (risk 2):
- Method > 10 LOC
- Class > 50 LOC
- > 3 positional parameters (use keyword args)
- `@@class_variable` (use class instance variables)
- Bare `rescue` without exception class
- `and`/`or` in conditions (use `&&`/`||`)

## Stack-Specific Rules
### Ruby / Rails

**Service Objects:**
- Collapse trivial single-method services into model methods or controller flow.
- Merge fragmented orchestration (Processor + Handler + Manager) into one transaction object.
- Delete fake inheritance chains (`BaseService`). Use modules for shared behavior.
- Keep services only when there is real orchestration: multi-model, transaction, external call.
**Models:**
- Inline concerns used in exactly one model.
- Convert service objects that only build `where` chains into model scopes.
- Use `delegate` to fix Law of Demeter violations (`invoice.user.address.city`).
- `after_commit` for all side effects; never `after_save`.
- Never `default_scope` — use explicit named scopes.
- Always `dependent:` on `has_many`/`has_one`.
- Hash syntax for all `enum` declarations.
**Controllers:**
- One meaningful method per action. Delegate to service/model.
- Scope record lookups to `current_user` (IDOR prevention).
- Extract repeated `find` calls to `before_action`.
- Pass locals to partials; never rely on instance variables in partials.
**Queries:**
- No string interpolation in SQL (injection).
- Use `.size` not `.count` on loaded relations.
- `find_each` for collections > 1000 rows.
- Eager load associations (`includes`) to fix N+1.
- Use ranges in `where` instead of comparison fragments.
- `pluck` for value extraction; `pick` for single value.
**Migrations:**
- Add indexes for all foreign keys and frequently queried columns.
- Never put seed data in migrations.
- Use a dedicated migration model class; never reference app models directly.
- `change_table bulk: true` for multiple column changes on large tables.
### JavaScript / TypeScript / React

- Replace one-method manager classes with plain async functions.
- Remove wrapper classes that add no state.
- Flatten nested `.then()` chains to `async/await`.
- Remove `useMemo`/`useCallback` with static deps or cheap computations.
- Convert `useState` for derived values to inline computation.
- Remove empty wrapper React components.
- Consolidate utility duplication into `utils/` module.
- Delete redundant DTOs that mirror API responses exactly.
- Replace `any` / `unknown` wrappers with strict domain types.

- Collapse trivial `@dataclass` (fields only) to `TypedDict` or plain dict.
- Delete fake ABCs with one concrete subclass and no polymorphism.
- Replace one-method manager classes with module-level functions.
- Remove unnecessary `@staticmethod` — move to module level.
- Fix bare `except` / `except Exception: pass` to specific exception types.
- Flatten nested function pyramids to flat module-level functions.
- Replace `*args, **kwargs` with explicit typed params in public methods.
- Modernize `Optional[X]` → `X | None` (Python ≥ 3.10 only).
- Replace `Any` with concrete types, `TypedDict`, or Pydantic models.
- Convert trivial Django CBVs to function-based views.
- Convert DRF serializers that manually mirror model fields to `ModelSerializer`.
- Delete empty Django middleware/decorator stubs.
- Remove `async def` from CPU-bound or I/O-free functions.

## Decision Rules

- Smell is a pure dispensable (dead code, obvious duplicate, style fix)
- Tests exist and cover the path
- Local change (≤ 2 files)
- No public API, framework hook, or security boundary touched
**Flag and ask (risk 3–5):**
- Coupled across > 2 files
- No tests cover the code
- Callbacks, validations, auth, or transactions involved
- Any security or performance finding
**Skip:**
- Code is already idiomatic and minimal
- Safety cannot be proven
- The "fix" would just be a personal style preference
