Automated summary

Defines intermediate CONTAINER.yml scopes in MOOLLM so child directories inherit shared properties without becoming navigable rooms.

Strengths

  • Clearly separates container, room, and metadata roles.
  • Explains cascade, override, and merge behavior for inherited properties.
  • Includes concrete YAML examples for mazes and animal character categories.

Limitations

  • Highly specific to MOOLLM and its YAML conventions.
  • Does not describe validation or automated enforcement of inheritance.
  • Assumes familiarity with ROOM.yml and adventure directory layout.
When to use it

Use when a MOOLLM directory should pass shared properties down to descendants while remaining non-navigable.

When not to use it

Avoid when the directory is an enterable room, only needs system metadata, or has no inherited properties to define.

Security analysis

Safe
Quality score88/100

The skill is purely declarative documentation about a YAML-based inheritance pattern. It uses only read_file and write_file, and contains no executable commands, network access, or destructive operations. No risk of data exfiltration or system harm.

Examples

Dark maze container
Create a CONTAINER.yml for a maze directory that makes every child room dark and dangerous and adds grue rules.
Animal character defaults
Write a CONTAINER.yml under characters/animals that inherits type animal and sets defaults for speech, petting, and diet.
Container vs room
Should this adventure directory use CONTAINER.yml or ROOM.yml? Explain the inheritance and navigation trade-offs.

name: container description: "Intermediate scope for inheritance — like OpenLaszlo's <node>" license: MIT tier: 1 allowed-tools:

  • write_file related: [room, object, adventure, prototype, logistic-container] tags: [moollm, scope, inheritance, hierarchy, composition]

Container

Intermediate scopes that provide inheritance without being navigable rooms.

Containers are directories that define shared properties for their children, without themselves being places you can "go to."

The OpenLaszlo Inspiration

In OpenLaszlo (Don Hopkins' earlier work!), <node> was a fundamental building block:

<!-- OpenLaszlo: <node> provides inheritance without visual layout -->
<node name="mazeDefaults">
  <attribute name="isDark" value="true"/>
  <attribute name="hasDanger" value="true"/>
</node>

<view extends="mazeDefaults">
  <!-- Inherits isDark, hasDanger -->
</view>

MOOLLM's CONTAINER.yml does the same for adventure directories:

# maze/CONTAINER.yml
container:
  name: "The Twisty Maze"

  inherits:
    is_dark: true
    is_dangerous: true
    grue_rules:
      can_appear: true

All rooms inside maze/ automatically inherit these properties!

Container vs Room vs Meta

| Type | File | Navigable? | Inherits to children? | |------|------|------------|----------------------| | Room | ROOM.yml | ✅ Yes | ❌ No | | Container | CONTAINER.yml | ❌ No | ✅ Yes | | Meta | .meta.yml | ❌ No | ❌ No (just metadata) |

Use Container when:

  • You want to define shared properties
  • Children should inherit automatically
  • The directory itself is not a place

Use Room when:

  • The directory is a navigable location
  • It has exits and can be entered

Use .meta.yml when:

  • Just declaring "this is a system directory"
  • No inheritance needed

Inheritance Rules

Cascade Down

Properties in inherits: flow to ALL descendants:

maze/
├── CONTAINER.yml       # inherits: { is_dark: true }
├── room-a/
│ └── ROOM.yml # Inherits is_dark: true
├── room-b/
│ └── ROOM.yml # Inherits is_dark: true
└── deep/
    └── CONTAINER.yml # Can add MORE inherits
        └── room-c/
            └── ROOM.yml # Inherits from BOTH containers!

Override by Redefining

Children can override inherited values:

# maze/room-f/ROOM.yml
room:
  name: "The Treasure Chamber"
is_dark: false # Override! This room has magical light

Merge, Don't Replace

For objects and arrays, inheritance MERGES:

# maze/CONTAINER.yml
container:
  inherits:
    rules:
      - "Grues patrol in darkness"

# maze/room-g/ROOM.yml
room:
  rules:
    - "This room has a pit trap" # ADDS to inherited rules

Result: room-g has BOTH rules.

Defaults vs Inherits

| Field | Purpose | |-------|---------| | inherits | Properties that children GET automatically | | defaults | Values to use IF a child doesn't define them |

container:
  # Every child room IS dark (forced)
  inherits:
    is_dark: true

  # If a room doesn't define atmosphere, use this
  defaults:
    room:
      atmosphere: "damp and musty"

Use Cases

Maze with Grue Rules

# maze/CONTAINER.yml
container:
  name: "The Twisty Maze"
description: "Passages all alike... or are they?"

  inherits:
    is_dark: true
    is_dangerous: true
    grue_rules:
      can_appear: true
      safe_with_light: true

  rules:
    - "No teleportation"
    - "Breadcrumbs disappear after 3 turns"
    - "Echoes alert nearby rooms"

  ambient:
    sound: "dripping water"
    smell: "wet stone"
    temperature: cold

Animal Character Category

# characters/animals/CONTAINER.yml
container:
  name: "Animal Characters"
  description: "Non-human beings with souls"

  inherits:
    type: animal
    has_instincts: true

  defaults:
    character:
      can_speak_human: false
      pet_able: true
      diet: omnivore

Kitchen Appliances

# kitchen/appliances/CONTAINER.yml
container:
  name: "Kitchen Appliances"

  inherits:
    type: appliance
    requires_power: true

  defaults:
    object:
      breakable: true
      fixable_with: "wrench"

Resolution Order

When looking up a property:

  1. Self — Check the object/room itself
  2. Parent Container — Check CONTAINER.yml in parent dir
  3. Grandparent Container — Keep going up
  4. Adventure Defaults — ADVENTURE.yml defaults
  5. Prototype — The skill template
maze/deep/room-c/ROOM.yml
    ↓ inherits from
maze/deep/CONTAINER.yml
    ↓ inherits from
maze/CONTAINER.yml
    ↓ inherits from
ADVENTURE.yml (if it has defaults)
    ↓ inherits from
skills/room/ROOM.yml.tmpl

Linter Behavior

The linter recognizes CONTAINER.yml:

📂 Phase 1: Discovery
   Found: 36 rooms, 54 objects, 6 characters
   Found: 2 containers # NEW!

Containers suppress the "missing type declaration" warning:

# Before: maze/ triggers warning
⚠️ Directory has room children but no ROOM.yml

# After: maze/CONTAINER.yml exists
✅ maze/ is a container (not a room)

  • Prototype Inheritance (Self/JavaScript) — Objects inherit from prototypes
  • Lexical Scope (Lisp/JavaScript) — Inner scopes access outer variables
  • Cascading (CSS) — Styles flow from parent to child
  • XML Namespaces — Context flows through the tree

This download contains SKILL.md only. Any scripts, references, templates and dependencies are not included. Get the required files from the source, preserving their directory structure, before continuing.

1. Download the file

Download SKILL.md

From the root of a test project, save the file as .skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md, or use the command below. This folder is for inspecting the skill before installation.

Command for macOS/Linux or WSL: requires a POSIX shell and curl. On Windows without WSL, use the download button and create the folder manually.

mkdir -p '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh' && curl --fail --show-error --location 'https://skills-guides.com/api/skills/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/download' --output '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md.part' && mv '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md.part' '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md'

2. Check prerequisites

Read SKILL.md before using it. If it references scripts or external services, inspect them and prepare the required access in your test environment.

No recognized prerequisites section in this file. This does not mean it is self-contained: libraries, tools and access requirements may be mentioned elsewhere in the content or source repository.

The platforms on this page are catalog indications. The paths below follow tool documentation; they do not prove this skill has been run in those tools. No minimum tool version is confirmed for this listing.

3. Load the skill

After inspection, copy the complete folder into your project using one of the commands below, then open a new tool session. The command stops if a folder with the same name already exists: compare the files before replacing it.

test -f '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md' && test -s '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md' && mkdir -p '.claude/skills' && test ! -e '.claude/skills/container' && cp -R '.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh' '.claude/skills/container'

OpenSkills

OpenSkills must already be installed. The local install/read procedure is checked with OpenSkills 1.5.0, which requires Node.js ≥ 20.6.0. Catalog slugs are not resolved automatically.

Official OpenSkills installation
openskills install './.skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh'

openskills read 'container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh'

Reading should display the installed file content and its base directory. It does not run the skill or install its dependencies.

For an agent that reads AGENTS.md, then sync the index. This command changes AGENTS.md: review the diff before using it.

openskills sync

Manual method or another tool: attach SKILL.md to a conversation, or open it in an agent that can read files. Include any required supporting resources. No universal folder is recognized by every tool.

4. Try a first task

Use a short, synthetic input: an API endpoint, a small document or an interface brief. In a new conversation, attach the file or give the agent its path, then adapt this request:

Read .skill-downloads/container-scope-for-inheritance-ms5lrghh/SKILL.md and apply its instructions to this example: [describe a test input]. Identify any missing files, dependencies or access. Produce the result requested by the skill without inventing data or running unreviewed scripts.

Expected result: output matching the skill instructions, or a precise list of missing prerequisites. A read confirmation alone does not validate a first use. If an external resource is unavailable, that path remains untested.
