Automated summary
Fetches real-time and historical OHLCV cryptocurrency prices through a Python CLI with caching, multi-currency support, and watchlists.
Strengths
- Covers 10,000+ cryptocurrencies and 30+ fiat currencies with a simple CLI
- Configurable cache TTL for spot and historical data to reduce API calls
- CSV/JSON export and custom date ranges for downstream analysis
- Acts as a reusable data layer for other crypto skills such as portfolio, tax, and DeFi
Limitations
- Requires installing requests, pandas, and yfinance, plus an optional CoinGecko key for higher rate limits
- Relies on third-party APIs, so prices can be stale for the duration of the cache TTL
- Alerts are mentioned in the description but no alert command is documented
Use when you need a spot quote, OHLCV history, or a watchlist scan ahead of portfolio or DeFi analysis.
Do not use it to place trades, read order-book depth, or execute on an exchange, which this skill does not support.
Security analysis
CautionNo destructive, obfuscated, or exfiltrating instructions are present: commands are plain python invocations for fetching public market data, and any API key is scoped to the documented provider. Risk is limited to normal network access, dependency installation, and local file writes, so it lands at caution rather than risky. A reviewer should ideally inspect the referenced price_tracker.py before distribution since it is the component that actually executes.
- •Invokes python scripts via Bash(python:*) that perform outbound network requests to third-party APIs (CoinGecko, yfinance) — legitimate but requires network access and trusts external data sources.
- •Instructs `pip install requests pandas yfinance` (and optional python-dotenv), which mutates the environment and pulls arbitrary package versions without pinning.
- •Reads COINGECKO_API_KEY from environment/config; the key is only described as used for CoinGecko rate limits, but the actual script code is not included in SKILL.md, so key handling (logging, storage in cache/CSV) cannot be verified.
- •Writes to {baseDir}/config/settings.yaml and a local ./data cache directory — expected file writes, scoped to the skill directory.
- •Bundled script `scripts/price_tracker.py` and `references/errors.md` are referenced but not shown; actual behavior of the executable code is unaudited.

Prerequisites
Install required dependencies:
pip install requests pandas yfinance
Optional for advanced features:
pip install python-dotenv # For API key management
API Setup (optional, for higher rate limits):
- Get free API key from https://www.coingecko.com/en/api
- Add to
{baseDir}/config/settings.yamlor set environment variableCOINGECKO_API_KEY
Instructions
Step 1: Quick Price Check
Get current price for any cryptocurrency:
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC
Check multiple assets:
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbols BTC,ETH,SOL
Step 2: Use Watchlists
Scan predefined watchlists:
# Top 10 by market cap
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist top10
# DeFi tokens
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist defi
# Layer 2 tokens
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist layer2
Available watchlists: top10, defi, layer2, stablecoins, memecoins
Step 3: Fetch Historical Data
Get OHLCV (Open, High, Low, Close, Volume) history:
# Last 30 days
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC --period 30d
# Last 90 days with CSV export
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC --period 90d --output csv
# Custom date range
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol ETH --start 2024-01-01 --end 2024-12-31
Step 4: Configure Settings
Edit {baseDir}/config/settings.yaml to customize:
cache:
spot_ttl: 30 # Seconds to cache spot prices
historical_ttl: 3600 # Seconds to cache historical data
currency:
default: usd # Default fiat currency
watchlists:
custom: # Add your own watchlist
- BTC
- ETH
- SOL

Error Handling
See {baseDir}/references/errors.md for comprehensive error handling.
Common Errors
| Error | Cause | Solution |
|-------|-------|----------|
| Unknown symbol: XYZ | Invalid cryptocurrency ticker | Check spelling, use --list to search |
| Rate limit exceeded | Too many API calls | Wait 60s, or use API key for higher limits |
| Network error | No internet connection | Check connection, cached data will be used |
| Cache stale | Cached data older than TTL | Data still shown with warning, will refresh |
Rate Limit Handling
The skill automatically:
- Uses cached data when available
- Applies exponential backoff on rate limits
- Falls back to yfinance if CoinGecko fails
- Shows stale cache data with warning as last resort
Examples
See {baseDir}/references/examples.md for detailed examples including:
- Multi-timeframe analysis
- Portfolio value calculation
- Price alert setup
- Integration with other skills
Example 1: Quick Price Check
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol BTC
Output:
BTC (Bitcoin)
$97,234.56 USD
+2.34% (24h) | Vol: $28.5B | MCap: $1.92T
Example 2: Watchlist Scan
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --watchlist top10
Example 3: Historical Export
python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbol ETH --period 90d --output csv
Creates: {baseDir}/data/ETH_90d_[date].csv
Integration with Other Skills
This skill provides the price data foundation for other crypto skills.
Direct Import (recommended for Python skills):
from price_tracker import get_current_prices, get_historical_prices
# Get prices for portfolio valuation
prices = get_current_prices(["BTC", "ETH", "SOL"])
CLI Subprocess (for non-Python or isolation):
PRICES=$(python {baseDir}/scripts/price_tracker.py --symbols BTC,ETH --format json)
Shared Cache (efficient for batch):
Multiple skills can read from {baseDir}/data/cache.json to avoid redundant API calls.
Files
| File | Purpose |
|------|---------|
| scripts/price_tracker.py | Main CLI entry point |
| scripts/api_client.py | CoinGecko/yfinance abstraction |
| scripts/cache_manager.py | Cache read/write/invalidation |
| scripts/formatters.py | Output formatting |
| config/settings.yaml | User configuration |

For an agent that reads AGENTS.md, then sync the index. This command changes AGENTS.md: review the diff before using it.
openskills syncManual method or another tool: attach SKILL.md to a conversation, or open it in an agent that can read files. Include any required supporting resources. No universal folder is recognized by every tool.
4. Try a first task
Use a short, synthetic input: an API endpoint, a small document or an interface brief. In a new conversation, attach the file or give the agent its path, then adapt this request:
Read .skill-downloads/tracking-crypto-prices-mmk3nhto/SKILL.md and apply its instructions to this example: [describe a test input]. Identify any missing files, dependencies or access. Produce the result requested by the skill without inventing data or running unreviewed scripts.Expected result: output matching the skill instructions, or a precise list of missing prerequisites. A read confirmation alone does not validate a first use. If an external resource is unavailable, that path remains untested.
