Automated summary
Turns a YouTube video's transcript into an installed Claude Code skill by extracting the methodology it teaches and rewriting it as a SKILL.md file.
Strengths
- Guided five-step pipeline from transcript retrieval to installation, with a copy-paste prompt at every stage.
- Ships a one-shot 'full pipeline' prompt that goes from video URL to installed skill in a single request.
- Lists several practical transcript options: YouTube's built-in panel, yt-dlp, or asking Claude directly.
- Gives a clear table of which video types convert well (frameworks, prompt-engineering guides, playbooks) and which do not.
Limitations
- Assumes the transcript already contains explicit steps, so purely visual or motivational videos cannot be converted.
- Not automated: you still have to fetch and paste the transcript before extraction can begin.
- Output quality depends entirely on the accuracy and currency of the source video.
Use it after watching a tutorial, framework walkthrough, or prompt-engineering talk whose method you want reusable on demand.
Avoid it for inspirational content, mostly visual demos, or outdated videos that contain no repeatable steps.
Security analysis
CautionThe skill instructs the use of shell commands and network tools (yt-dlp, npx) for legitimate purposes: fetching transcripts, saving skill files, and installing skills. No destructive or exfiltrating actions are present, but the ability to run npx against user-supplied repositories and download content warrants caution.
- •Includes shell commands to create directories and write skill files (mkdir, cat >).
- •Suggests using yt-dlp to download video subtitles, which involves network access.
- •Recommends `npx skills add <owner>/<repo>` to install a skill from an arbitrary repository, which could execute untrusted code.
Examples
/youtube-to-skill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123 cold-email-playbookHow do I turn a YouTube video into a Claude Code skill? Walk me through the full technique.I want to turn this YouTube video into a Claude Code skill: https://youtu.be/xyz789 — extract the core methodology and save the SKILL.md to .claude/skills/code-review-checklist/SKILL.mddescription: YouTube → Claude Skill — Ben Gusberg's technique for converting YouTube video transcripts into reusable Claude Skills argument-hint: [youtube-url] [skill-name] — or run with no args for the full technique
You are a Claude Skill builder using Ben Gusberg's YouTube-to-Skill technique. This method turns any YouTube video's transcript into a reusable Claude Code skill.
If no argument is given, explain the full technique and ask for a YouTube URL to start.
THE TECHNIQUE
Any YouTube video that teaches a process, framework, or technique can become a Claude Skill. The transcript is the raw material. You extract the methodology, structure it as a skill, and install it so Claude applies it consistently on demand.
STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS
Step 1 — Get the Transcript
Option A — YouTube's built-in transcript:
- Open the video on YouTube
- Click the
...menu below the video - Select "Show transcript"
- Copy the full transcript text
Option B — Use a transcript tool:
yt-dlp --write-auto-sub --skip-download <url>- Or paste the YouTube URL into a transcript service
Option C — Ask Claude:
Get the transcript from this YouTube video: [URL]
Step 2 — Extract the Methodology
Paste the transcript and run this prompt:
Here is the transcript from a YouTube video: [PASTE TRANSCRIPT]
Analyze it and extract:
1. The core methodology, framework, or process being taught
2. Step-by-step instructions in the order they should be applied
3. Key principles or rules the author emphasizes
4. Any specific prompts, templates, or examples shown
5. The intended outcome when the technique is applied correctly
Format the output as a structured guide suitable for a Claude Code skill file.
Step 3 — Structure as a Skill
Convert the extracted methodology into a Claude Code skill:
Now convert that extracted methodology into a Claude Code skill file.
The file should:
- Start with YAML frontmatter (description, argument-hint)
- Begin with a one-paragraph summary of what the skill does
- Include the methodology as numbered steps or named sections
- Include any prompts or templates from the video in code blocks
- End with a quick reference table if the skill has multiple modes
Output the full .md file content ready to save.
Step 4 — Install the Skill
# Save to your skills directory
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>
cat > ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md << 'EOF'
[PASTE SKILL CONTENT]
EOF
# Or install from a repo
npx skills add <owner>/<repo>
Step 5 — Test It
/skill-name [test case]
Run it against a real example and compare the output to what the video's technique would produce. Refine the skill file if needed.
FULL PIPELINE PROMPT
Use this to go from URL to installed skill in one shot:
I want to turn this YouTube video into a Claude Code skill.
Video URL: [URL]
1. Get or use this transcript: [PASTE TRANSCRIPT IF AVAILABLE]
2. Extract the core methodology, steps, principles, and any templates shown.
3. Write the full SKILL.md file with proper YAML frontmatter.
4. Save it to .claude/skills/[skill-name]/SKILL.md
5. Tell me the install command and how to invoke it.
BEST VIDEOS TO CONVERT
Great candidates for this technique:
| Video type | Why it works | |------------|-------------| | Frameworks & processes | Step-by-step → direct skill steps | | Prompt engineering guides | Prompts → copy-paste templates in skill | | Productivity systems | Rules → CLAUDE.md additions | | Technical tutorials | Code patterns → coding conventions | | Business playbooks | Checklists → repeatable workflows |
Poor candidates:
- Motivational/inspirational content (no actionable steps)
- Highly visual demos where the technique can't be captured in text
- Videos with outdated information

Download SKILL.mdFrom the root of a test project, save the file as .skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/SKILL.md, or use the command below. This folder is for inspecting the skill before installation.
Command for macOS/Linux or WSL: requires a POSIX shell and curl. On Windows without WSL, use the download button and create the folder manually.
mkdir -p '.skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5' && curl --fail --show-error --location 'https://skills-guides.com/api/skills/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/download' --output '.skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/SKILL.md.part' && mv '.skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/SKILL.md.part' '.skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/SKILL.md'2. Check prerequisites
Read SKILL.md before using it. If it references scripts or external services, inspect them and prepare the required access in your test environment.

The platforms on this page are catalog indications. The paths below follow tool documentation; they do not prove this skill has been run in those tools. No minimum tool version is confirmed for this listing.
3. Load the skill
This file does not provide a usable name/description header for this native procedure. It remains available to download and inspect; use the manual method below.
Manual method or another tool: attach SKILL.md to a conversation, or open it in an agent that can read files. Include any required supporting resources. No universal folder is recognized by every tool.
4. Try a first task
Use a short, synthetic input: an API endpoint, a small document or an interface brief. In a new conversation, attach the file or give the agent its path, then adapt this request:
Read .skill-downloads/youtube-to-claude-skill-mu99jod5/SKILL.md and apply its instructions to this example: [describe a test input]. Identify any missing files, dependencies or access. Produce the result requested by the skill without inventing data or running unreviewed scripts.Expected result: output matching the skill instructions, or a precise list of missing prerequisites. A read confirmation alone does not validate a first use. If an external resource is unavailable, that path remains untested.
